LtCol Armstrong was born in Johnson City, Tennessee. Following completion of high school, he received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy where he earned a B. S. in Ocean Engineering. Upon graduation in May of 2006, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

Sergeant Major Michael P. Foley was born in Saint Louis, Missouri on 9 December 1978. He enlisted in the United States Marin Corps June 17 2002 an reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego, CA, for recruit training. Upon completing training at MCRD, he reported to Camp Pendleton for Marine Combat Training. On February 17, he reported to Camp Johnson for training as a 3521 Motor Transport Automotive Technician.
