Sergeant Major John (Jack) A. Ramson is a native of Rice Lake Wisconsin. While attending College, drawn by the events of 9/11, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and reported to MCRD Sand Diego on 17 February 2004. Upon completion of recruit training and Marine Combat Training, Private First Class Ramson attended M1A1 Main Battle Tank Crewman Course aboard Fort Knox, Kentucky and was assigned the 1812 MOS (M1A1 Tank Crewman).
LCpl Ramson reported to Company A, 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division aboard Marine Air Ground Combat Center Twenty Nine-Palms, California in September of 2004. January through August of 2005 LCpl Ramson deployed to Iraq in support of OIF as an M1A1 tank loader. In March 2006, he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal, and deployed again with Company A in support of OIF IV/V in August of 2006 as a Gunner returning in April 2007. Upon return he was promoted to Sergeant and was selected to be a Tank Commander.
In January of 2008 Sgt Ramson reported to Marine Armor Crewman Course aboard Ft Knox Kentucky as an M1A1 main battle tank instructor. He served as a Tank Commander/ Instructor and Platoon Sergeant until December of 2009 where he was selected to be the Marine Liaison to the Army's Basic Officer Leadership Course II where he taught and evaluated all Marine Officer Students certifying them to be Tank Officers and company commanders.
April 2011, Sgt Ramson received orders to 2d Tank Battalion, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune North Carolina as a Tank Commander and Company Master Gunner with D Company. In August 2012, Sgt Ramson was chosen to be a combat replacement, and rapidly deployed in support of OEF where he attached to B Company forward as a section leader, returning February 2013.
September 2013 he reported in to Recruiting Station Louisville, Recruiting Sub-Station Evansville Indiana. He was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in December 2013, and was then assigned as the SNCOIC for RSS Evansville.
November of 2016, after a successful tour on recruiting duty, SSgt Ramson reported back to 2d Tank Battalion, 2d Marine Division, as a Tank Leader for Company A. In April 2017, SSgt Ramson checked in to Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 2/6 as the Tank Platoon Sergeant and was promoted in November 2017 to Gunnery Sergeant subsequently deploying with BLT 2/6. After returning from deployment in September 2018 he was assigned as the Battalion Master Gunner for 2d Tank Battalion.
In July of 2019, he reported to 4th Tank Battalion, 4th Marine Division San Diego, California to serve as the Inspector-Instructor Battalion Master Gunner and Headquarters and Service Company Inspector-Instructor Company First Sergeant, and Selected Marine Corps Reserve First Sergeant.
December of 2020 First Sergeant Ramson was assigned as the Headquarters and Service Company Senior Enlisted Leader, Marine Wing Support Squadron-272 (MWSS), 2d Marine Aircraft Wing where he was the first First Sergeant to serve in any MWSS in the Marine Corps.
On March 7th 2022 he reported to 2d Battalion, 8th Marines where he served as the Headquarters and Services company Senior Enlisted Leader. On November 26, 2022 he reported to 2d Marine Regiment as the Headquarters Company Senior Enlisted Leader where he deployed in support of the SW Border Surge with JTF North.
In August 2024 he was promoted to Sergeant Major and was assigned to First Battalion, Sixth Marines as the Battalion Sergeant Major in October 2024.
Sergeant Major Ramson's personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with (3) gold stars in lieu of 4th award), the Navy Achievement Medal (with (4) Gold Stars in lieu of 5th award) and Combat Action Ribbon (with gold star in lieu of 2nd award). He holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Management focused in Talent management and acquisitions from AMU.
