Master Gunnery Sergeant Alex J. Reyes

 

Master Gunnery Sergeant Reyes was born in Bronx, New York on 29 March 1985. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on 9 September 2003 and graduated from MCRD Parris Island in December 2003.  After graduating from the School of Infantry in 2004 as an 0311, he reported to 3d Battalion 8th Marines for duty.  In 2004, then Private First Class Reyes’ unit was activated from ACM to support Operation Secure Tomorrow in Haiti. Upon return from deployment, he was promoted to Lance Corporal. During his tour with 3rd Battalion 8th Marines Lance Corporal Reyes deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005 to Fallujah and 2007 to Ramadi, Iraq. He was promoted to Corporal during his deployment to Ramadi in 2007.Corporal Reyes served as a Rifleman, Automatic Rifleman, Fire Team Leader, and Squad Leader when he then received orders to Marine Combat Instructor School at School of Infantry East in Camp Geiger, NC. 

Upon completion of Marine Combat Instructor School at School of Infantry East in Camp Geiger, NC, Corporal Reyes was promoted to Sergeant. He was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant in 2008.  From 2007 to 2010 Staff Sergeant Reyes served as a Squad Instructor in Alpha Company, ITB, Weapons and Munitions Chief Instructor, and Tactics Primary Instructor in the Tactics Instructor Group in Headquarters and Instructor Company.   

Following duty as a Combat Instructor, Staff Sergeant Reyes was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marines as the Weapons Platoon Sergeant in Co A.  He also served as a Rifle Platoon Sergeant and Rifle Platoon Commander. During his tour with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, he deployed twice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  

In February 2013, Staff Sergeant Reyes reported for duty to Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Virginia and served as the Tactics Chief Instructor and Platoon Sergeant.  Staff Sergeant Reyes received orders back to School of Infantry East to serve a second tour as a Combat Instructor. He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant on August 1st, 2015, and served as Company Gunnery Sergeant in Company D, Infantry Training Battalion. He was then selected to serve as an Instructor at Infantry Unit Leaders Course, Advanced Infantry Training Battalion and served as the Chief Instructor at Infantry Small Unit Leaders Course.

In September 2017, GySgt Reyes received orders to 1st Battalion 6th Marines Company C as the Company Gunnery Sergeant. Immediately after arriving to the unit in September, he deployed as part of Task Force 9.7 to Syria in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. In February 2019 he was promoted to Master Sergeant. He then deployed to Japan in support of the UDP.  During that time, he served as the Battalion Operations Chief and Assistant Operations Chief.  

Master Sergeant Reyes was then assigned to duties within the Ground Combat Element Branch of Plans, Policies, and Operations (Pentagon) at Headquarters Marine Corps as the Infantry Occupational Field Specialist. He assisted in the planning and development for FD2030 Infantry Battalion Redesign. Master Sergeant Reyes completed Expeditionary Warfare School Distance Education Program in 2023. He was promoted to Master Gunnery Sergeant and received orders to serve as the Operations Chief for 3d Battalion 6th Marines.

Master Gunnery Sergeant Reyes’ personal awards include the Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device and three gold stars, Combat Action Ribbon with gold star. Humanitarian Service Medal, and Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
