Operations Chief, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, 6th Marine Regiment
Master Gunnery Sergeant Levi R. Canty

Levi Canty enlisted in the Marine Corps on 6 June 2005 and attended Recruit Training at MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina. Following graduation, he reported to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Infantry Training Battalion East and acquired the MOS of 0311 Rifleman. In November of 2005 Private Canty reported to Marine Corps Security Force School in Chesapeake, Virgina for training and obtained the MOS of 8152 Marine Security Force Guard.

In January of 2005 Private First Class Canty reported to Marine Barracks 8th and I for duties as a Ceremonial Marcher where he served as a Rifleman, Team Leader and Ceremonial Drill Instructor. During this tour Private First Class Canty was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.

In October of 2007 Lance Corporal Canty executed orders to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. In December of 2007 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. In March of 2008 he deployed to Al Anbar, Iraq as a Team Leader in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On 2 February 2009 Corporal Canty received a combat meritorious promotion to the rank of Sergeant. In June of 2009 Sergeant Canty deployed again with Delta Company 2nd LAR as a Squad Leader to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In June of 2010 Sergeant Canty graduated from Marine Combat Instructor School East obtaining the 0913 MOS and was subsequently assigned to Charlie Company ITB as a Squad Instructor. In December of 2012 Sergeant Canty obtained the 0351 Assaultman MOS and transferred to the Weapons Instructor Group serving as the Urban Breaching Instructor. In July of 2013 Sergeant Canty was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and attended the Infantry Unit Leaders Course obtaining the 0369 MOS.

In September of 2013 Staff Sergeant Canty reported to 1st Battalion 3rd Marines aboard Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and was assigned as the Anti-Armor Platoon Sergeant. Staff Sergeant Canty deployed with the Battalion as part of the Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa, Japan as a CAAT Platoon Commander. Upon returning from the UDP, Staff Sergeant Canty was reassigned as a Rifle Platoon Sergeant and Weapons Platoon Sergeant in Bravo Company. In December of 2015 Staff Sergeant Canty deployed again with the Battalion as part of the Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa. During that deployment he assumed the duties of Bravo Company Gunnery Sergeant.

In August of 2016 Staff Sergeant Canty reported to Headquarters and Service Battalion Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island for duties as the Service Company Gunnery Sergeant. On July 2018 Staff Sergeant Canty was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and assumed the duties of the Headquarters Company First Sergeant.

In March of 2020 Gunnery Sergeant Canty received orders to 3rd Battalion 1st Marines assuming the duties of Weapons Company Operations Chief. In September 2020 he deployed with the Battalion as a part of the SPMAGTF-CC-CR in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. During this deployment he was selected as an individual augment to Joint Special Operations Command serving as the Team Syria and Iraq Base Defense Chief for multiple sites throughout the both countries. Upon returning from deployment he was assigned as the Kilo Company Gunnery Sergeant.

On 1 March 2022 Gunnery Sergeant Canty was promoted to Master Sergeant and reported to I MIG for duties as the Information Warfare Chief. During his time at I MIG he participated and deployed to multiple countries in support of operations, activities and investments throughout INDOPACOM.

On 1 December 2023 Master Sergeant Canty reported to 26 Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) and immediately deployed to join them as the 26 MEU (SOC) Operations Chief for the last half of the deployment to EUCOM and CENTCOM AOR. During his time at the 26MEU he also served as the SPMAGTF-TRI-GCC Operations Chief.

On 1 May 2025 he was promoted to Master Gunnery Sergeant and executed orders to the Beirut Battalion, 1st Battalion 8th Marines where he currently serves as the Battalion Operations Chief.

His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 1 silver star in lieu of sixth award, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon..
