Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines
Lieutenant Colonel Matthew M. Newman

LtCol Newman is a native of Fairfax, VA. He graduated through the NROTC program at Virginia Tech in 2006 and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He subsequently attended The Basic School, Infantry Officer School, and Light Armored Reconnaissance Leaders Course. In July 2008, he deployed as a Platoon Commander, Company D, 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion to Nineveh, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). 

In April 2010, he deployed as a Company Executive Officer, Weapons Platoon Commander, FiST Leader and Joint Terminal Attack Controller, Company A, 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). ​

From June 2011 to June 2014, he served as Company Commander, Company A, and Company Commander, Headquarters and Instructor Group, Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry-West. In 2014, he earned a Masters degree from Central Michigan University. From 2014 to 2015, he attended Expeditionary Warfare School. ​

From 2015 to 2016, he served as Company Commander, Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 2d Marines and deployed to Unit Deployment Program, Okinawa, Japan. From 2016 to 2017, he served at Staff Secretary, 2d Marine Division. From 2017 to 2018, he served as Operations Officer, 2d Battalion, 8th Marines and deployed to Unit Deployment Program, Okinawa, Japan. ​

From 2018 to 2020, he attended US Army Command and General Staff College, and subsequently attended the US Army School of Advanced Military Studies, earning a Masters degree. ​

From 2020 to 2024, he served as a Future Operations Planner (G-35) for II Marine Expeditionary Force, deploying to 6th Fleet from January to June 2022. In 2024, he completed Top Level School, US Air War College (non-resident).​

On 16 May 2024, LtCol Newman assumed command of 1st Battalion, 6th Marines. ​
